A Response to the Call for an AI Moratorium

Dear proponents of the six-month moratorium on GPT technology,

While we understand and appreciate the concerns raised in your open letter, we believe that once progress has started, it cannot be taken back. We argue that such a moratorium would primarily benefit those who have already reaped the rewards of GPT technology and might now seek to control the narrative.

The call for a pause on GPT development could lead to a situation in which society becomes more dependent on paid ChatGPT plugins, thereby consolidating power and influence among the wealthy who have access to these resources. This might create an unjust disparity, where only a select few have the means to harness the power of AI.

It is also important to consider that the parties calling for this moratorium might be motivated by fear of their own creations, realizing that they rushed products to market without proper ethical guidelines. While the desire to address these issues is commendable, attempting to put the “cat back in the bag” is not a feasible solution.

Moreover, it is crucial to recognize that security is often more theater than substance. The proposed moratorium could create a false sense of security, reminiscent of post-9/11 measures that focused more on appearances than actual safety. In reality, halting AI development might not effectively mitigate the risks associated with these technologies.

Instead, we advocate for open collaboration among nations and organizations working on AI. By fostering a global environment of cooperation and knowledge sharing, we can collectively address the challenges and risks associated with AI development while ensuring that its benefits are equitably distributed.

It is crucial that we recognize that the time to act is now, and not by putting a halt to progress, but by working together to ensure that AI technology is developed responsibly and ethically. A moratorium might seem like a responsible step, but in reality, it would only serve to hinder the collaborative efforts needed to maximize AI’s potential for the benefit of all.

Sincerely,

Alice Scarlet Eidson (Scarlet Death)
